Dear Friends, I am delighted to share this summer newsletter with you. Over the last several months, this country has experienced several devastating natural disasters. We are proud that our most precious resource, our students, have answered the call to be a part of the first rounds of disaster relief work in both Birmingham, Alabama as well as in Joplin, Missouri. By enabling them to have experiences in the front lines of the recovery effort, we infuse our students with a sense of responsibility to the world community. This issue also contains the wonderful opportunities to engage with pulpit rabbis, the leadership training happening with the Washington Fellows, and the work of our students in development towns in Israel and in communities across North America. We are proud to share the publication of our annual Dean's Report, which reflects on the achievements of the CJF over the past academic year. I look forward to our continued partnership in developing a bright Jewish future. B'yedidut, Rabbi Kenneth Brander The David Mitzner Dean Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future News from the CJF Assitant Rabbi Conference: Training Rabbis The CJF recently hosted its annual conference for assistant rabbis. Fifteen assistant rabbis from across North America came together to discuss different topics of interest including, “Programming Round Table,” “Navigating Personal and Professional Challenges,” and “Managing Rabbinic Stress.” A shiur by RIETS Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Baruch Simon started off the day followed by presentations and discussions with Rabbi Menachem Penner, Rabbi Ronald Schwarzberg, Dr. David Pelcovitz, and Rabbi Levi Mostofsky. Washington Leadership Fellowship Graduate: Community Leadership The Washington Leadership Fellowship is a group of lay leaders in the early and middle stages of their leadership efforts. The group meets regularly throughout the year primarily in the Washington, DC area to obtain cutting edge leadership training education, the tools to apply that education and personal coaching, and an introduction to community leaders and issues so that graduates can play a leadership role in the Orthodox and greater Washington Jewish community. Programs include summer kollelim, a women's beit midrash, Counterpoint programs in Israel and Brazil, and summer lay leadership programs. Click for Full Article Summer Lay Leadership Experiences: Student Learning Last summer, CJF partnered with Rabbi Dani Rockoff and the Kansas City Jewish community to create a pilot program, the Kansas City Summer Fellowship. The program is continuing this summer with eight YU student participants working at various internships during the week, while engaging the greater Jewish community with Torah learning, informal educational programs and social events on evenings and on Shabbat. This summer, in addition to working with the Kansas City community, the group also travelled to Joplin, MO, to assist with the recovery and rebuilding efforts in that city.  Click for Full Article  Following Successful Fundraising Campaign, YU Students Volunteer to Help Combat Israel’s Water Challenges. 16 undergraduate fellows from the University’s QUEST student leadership program arrived in Israel on May 30, to spend a week working on various water reclamation projects across Israel. The trip served as the culmination of a successful fundraising campaign during which the students worked in partnership with the Jewish National Fund to raise $20,000 for the Parsons Water Fund, the JNF’s comprehensive plan to combat Israel’s ongoing water crisis. Click for Full Article QUEST Mission featured in Jerusalem Post QUEST Mission featured on Arutz Sheva New Orleans Service Mission: Student Service Twenty seven students traveled to New Orleans, LA and Birmingham, AL, for a week in May 2011 to engage in local service projects and tornado relief work. Additionally the students met with representatives and leadership of each of the communities. The students were exposed to the current challenges facing both cities.They learned the story of New Orleans, a city still being rebuilt six years after Hurricane Katrina, and they saw Birmingham, a city destroyed by dozens of tornadoes, which is now at the very beginning of the rebuilding process. Students learned in a hands-on way the effects of devastation, the importance of service, and communal responsibility. Through interactions with homeowners and community members the students learned that volunteering can be done by anyone and everyone. This was a lesson that empowered both those being helped and those giving the help.
